Program Overview

Texas State is located in San Marcos, Texas, part of the booming Austin Metropolitan Area. Students have opportunities in construction-oriented research, internships, and employment.

Texas State’s construction management master’s degree is based on nationally recognized academic standards along with feedback from the department’s Construction Advisory Board.

Course Work

The 30-hour program has two options:

  • Non-Thesis Option. For professional working students whose career goals are to attain advanced knowledge in the construction management field. The courses will be available 100% online to allow students to maintain their employment status. Students can choose to attend full time or part time. Full-time students will be able to complete the program in one year.
  • Thesis Option. For students inclined to go to a Ph.D. program or develop in-depth knowledge in a specific research area through the writing of a thesis.

Online Options

The non-thesis option of this program can be completed 100% online. If you are not a Texas resident and will not relocate, please visit the Office of Distance and Extended Learning. International applicants may be eligible to receive a Form I-20 or DS-2019 for an F-1 or J-1 visa from Texas State and complete courses in person in order to maintain the eligibility requirements. Program Details

Graduates of the department include company owners, CEOs of regional corporations, and many managers of construction contractors throughout Texas and the Southwest.

Program Mission

The program aims to:

  • apply advanced project management principles and practices to construction projects
  • evaluate and select principles of leadership in business and management
  • assemble extensive knowledge of current issues in construction to implement best practices
  • demonstrate the ability to solve complex project decision-making scenarios and their associated risk management in construction
  • integrate information and communication technology in construction management

Career Options

Graduates of the program secure positions in various construction-focused specialties, including construction contract administration, estimating, scheduling and project management, concrete ready-mix operations, concrete contracting, construction materials sales and distribution, and sustainability.

Program Faculty

The Department of Engineering Technology is home to many dedicated faculty members who take their commitment to higher education seriously. Faculty stay current in their fields of expertise through continual engagement in applied research, scholarship, and professional development. The department faculty are actively engaged in the execution of external grants and contracts awarded by federal and state agencies, industrial partners, and educational foundations. Faculty are also very active in publishing the results of their research in scholarly journals.

Admission Requirements

    • baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university in construction related area. Graduates of curricula outside these areas may be required to satisfy program prerequisite before full admission into the program. (Non-U.S. degrees must be equivalent to a four-year U.S. Bachelor’s degree. In most cases, three-year degrees are not considered. Visit our International FAQs for more information.)
    • a copy of an official transcript from each institution where course credit was granted
    • a competitive GPA in your last 60 hours of undergraduate course work (plus any completed graduate courses) (Effective Fall 2024: a competitive overall GPA or a competitive GPA in your last 60 hours of undergraduate course work, plus any completed graduate courses)
    • knowledge of construction management demonstrated through previous coursework and/or work experience

    Approved English Proficiency Exam Scores

    Applicants are required to submit an approved English proficiency exam score that meets the minimum program requirements below unless they have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or the equivalent from a country on our exempt countries list.

    • official TOEFL iBT scores required with a 78 overall
    • official PTE scores required with a 52 overall
    • official IELTS (academic) scores required with a 6.5 overall and
      • minimum individual module scores of 6.0
    • official Duolingo scores required with a 110 overall
    • official TOEFL Essentials scores required with an 8.5 overall
