Applicants are required to submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam scores unless they have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or the equivalent from a country on our exempt countries list.
The scores below will determine regular admission.
TOEFL and IELTS are valid only up to two years after the date of the exam.

Applicants who hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from an accredited institution in one of the following countries are automatically* exempt from submitting the English language proficiency requirements (TOEFL/IELTS) for graduate admission consideration:
- American Samoa
- Canada (except for Quebec)
- Cayman Islands
- New Zealand
- South Africa
- St. Kitts and Nevis
- St. Lucia St. Vincent and the Grenadines
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Turks and Caicos Islands
- U. S. Pacific Trust
- United Kingdom (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales)
- United States of America (except for Puerto Rico)
- Virgin Islands
*Exception: Due to the requirements of the Texas Education Agency (TEA), the following programs do not recognize the exemptions above and would require a degree from an accredited U.S. institution in order to waive the English proficiency requirements for graduate admission consideration.
- All teacher and professional certification programs
- Elementary Education (CMED, Master Math, and TRP only)
- Secondary Education (CMED and TRP only)
- Physical Education (MAC only)
- Special Education (CASE only)
If the country in which your degree was earned is not listed above, you must submit a TOEFL or IELTS exam score for admission. This includes applicants whose only degrees were earned from a university in India, Nepal, Nigeria, Kenya, Cameroon, Ghana, or Zimbabwe.
