CERT Intelligence Analysis

The program prepares students for analytical-oriented careers by cultivating critical thinking and problem-solving skills and cultural awareness sensitivity.

Program Overview

Unique features of the program are its rigor and concentration in intelligence analysis training and its practical approach to producing intelligence/crime analysis products and briefing papers. Students will develop problem-solving skills through the practical analysis of real-world case studies and simulation exercises that deal with intelligence and security issues.

This certificate programs requires 15 hours to complete.

Course Work

The graduate certificate in intelligence analysis requires 15 semester hours. To meet the diverse skill requirements that are unique to this multidisciplinary program, course work includes a wide range of elective courses from disciplines including computer science, criminal justice, history, psychology and geography. These electives may be customized to suit the individual student's needs or those of the sponsor for whom the student works as an intelligence analyst.

Program Details

Because of its multidisciplinary approach, this graduate-level certificate program is ideal preparation for doctoral study in international relations, political science, psychology, public administration, public policy, history, criminal justice or related fields.

Program Mission

The goals of the School of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Texas State include:

  • preparing competent and responsible public servants for roles in criminal investigation and apprehension, agency administration, prosecution, and correctional services
  • preparing graduates with advanced theoretical knowledge and research skills in criminal justice for leadership roles in academic, public policy, and administrative positions

The School of Criminal Justice and Criminology pursues these goals in the context of a broad university curriculum that provides a foundation of knowledge necessary to function in a challenging world.

Career Options

Career possibilities for graduates with a certificate in intelligence analysis include positions in security or intelligence organizations and government agencies such as homeland security, drug enforcement or border security. Graduates also find positions in federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, as well as private companies that produce analytic products for governments and corporations.

Program Faculty

Exceptional faculty and ongoing research enable the School of Criminal Justice to provide courses in areas of study such as policing, corrections, law, juvenile crime, female offending, environmental criminology, criminological theory, and management and organization. The school also offers a variety of specialized courses in crime analysis, statistics, and quantitative and qualitative data analysis and administers a number of institutes and centers, including the Center for Geospatial Intelligence and Investigation and the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center.

    • a copy of an official transcript from each institution where course credit was granted
    • minimum 2.75 GPA in your last 60 hours of undergraduate course work 
    • minimum 3.0 GPA in all completed graduate course work if you already hold a master's degree in criminal justice, computer science, history, geography or a field related to security and/or intelligence studies

    Approved English Proficiency Exam Scores

    Applicants are required to submit an approved English proficiency exam score that meets the minimum program requirements below unless they have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or the equivalent from a country on our exempt countries list.

    • official TOEFL iBT scores required with a 78 overall
    • official PTE scores required with a 52 overall
    • official IELTS (academic) scores required with a 6.5 overall and
      • minimum individual module scores of 6.0
    • official Duolingo Scores required with a 110 overall
    • official TOEFL Essentials scores required with an 8.5 overall
