TSIE Bridge Program

The purpose of the Texas State Intensive English (TSIE) Bridge Program is to allow students in select programs to meet their English language proficiency requirement before enrolling in courses for their degree program. A Bridge student's future enrollment in degree courses will depend on the improvement of their English language abilities while studying in the TSIE Program, specifically, a Bridge student will have one year to successfully complete all advanced-level ESL courses in the TSIE Program OR submit a new English proficiency test scores (TOEFL/IELTS) meeting the program’s requirements for regular admission. If they do not meet the English proficiency requirements within one year, they will not be allowed to enter into the graduate program and a new application for admission consideration must be submitted. Once the Bridge student satisfies the English proficiency requirements of graduate admission, their record will be reviewed for regular admission and they will be approved to enroll in degree courses within your graduate program.

The TSIE Program offers a comprehensive intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program for students wanting to improve their academic English skills. The program currently offers five levels in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as well as a TOEFL/IELTS preparation course. For more information, visit the Texas State Intensive English Program (TSIE) website.

Students admitted to the TSIE Bridge Program will be conditionally admitted to a degree program and receive an acceptance letter stating their English-based conditions of admission. Students requiring a student visa to study at Texas State will also receive a Form I-20 reflecting a full course of ESL study until meeting the requirements for regular admission.

Waivers/exemptions are available to specific applicants based on their previous education in certain countries, however, not all programs accept these exemptions. For more information, view the English Requirement Waivers (PDF) list.

Note: If the country in which your degree was earned is not listed on the waiver document above, you must submit a TOEFL or IELTS exam score for admission. This includes applicants whose only degrees were earned from a university in India, Nepal, Nigeria, Kenya, Cameroon, Ghana, or Zimbabwe.
