Running With the Graduate Deans participated in the 2015 Country Roads 10k in San Marcos. We had a great showing: Seven graduate students ran with the deans, two helpers associated with The Graduate College staffed our table, and two graduate students cheered us on – one of them even brought celebrity Ryan Gosling (well, sort of….). And let’s not forget that we had our own race photographers, thanks to biology professor Dr. Paula Williamson and her husband Dr. Donald Koehler. All this made for a sea of maroon-colored shirts sporting the Running With the Graduate Deans logo. The group could have been even bigger, as several faculty members from other departments without our logoed shirts also participated in the event…rest assured that shirts are in the mail to them, so that next time they’ll be able to run with us if they would like to! Not only did we dominate in terms of being the largest group at the event, but as the pictures indicate, we also dominated the awards ceremony: Cheyenne Meyer, graduate student in Mass Communication, was the overall female champion, while Associate Dean Eric Paulson was the male master’s champion. Several others placed in their age groups, and yet others set their own personal records, ran their very first race or their first race at that distance, or won door prizes. Congratulations to all!
For anyone starting to wonder – we are not all speed demons. Some of us jogged or walked some stretches of the hilly course. Whether we were fast or slow, we all had fun on the Country Roads 10k, cheering each other on, enjoying each other’s company, and raising funds for scholarships. How? For everyone who participates as a runner, helper, or spectator in the race shirt, we put the equivalent amount of the race fee into a scholarship account. All in in all, the group raised $420. A special shout-out to Cheyenne, who beat both graduate deans and thus raised twice the entry fee amount – great job, Cheyenne! To participate with us, just bring the race registration to The Graduate College (Suite 280 in the J.C. Kellam Administration Building) and pick up your shirt!
