Commencement December 19 & 20, 2008

OFFICIAL NOTICE TO CANDIDATES
Congratulations! Commencement is a special time to celebrate your academic achievements. There is no rehearsal, so please review this notice carefully.  Should you have further questions, the Office of the Graduate College is located in the J. C. Kellam Administration building, room 280, and is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., (512) 245-2581 or e-mail: gradcollege@txstate.edu.

TIME, PLACE, PARKING, & SEATING
Commencement ceremonies will be held on Friday, December 19 and Saturday December 20, 2008  in Strahan Coliseum.  Please review Graduate Majors by College to determine the ceremony you should attend.  The four ceremonies are:

Candidates should arrive at their respective gyms, as specified on the map, approximately one hour prior to the start of their ceremony in order to receive their candidate card and line up for the processional.

Strahan Coliseum is located at the corner of Aquarena Springs and Charles Austin Drive.  Out of town guests should use exit 205 on Interstate Highway 35 to travel to campus.  Parking is available at the Bobcat Stadium parking lot, which is located off Thorpe Lane directly behind the H.E.B. store.  Limited parking is available at the Strahan Coliseum lot east of Bugg Lane.  Shuttle buses are available and will originate at  the Texas State marquee sign in front of Strahan Coliseum.

Guest seating is on a first come, first serve basis.  Please be sure all guests are aware of the college in which your major falls and the seating location of that college in the Coliseum.
DISABILITY SERVICES
Accommodations for persons with disabilities (i.e., information in alternative format, sign language interpreting services, parking and seating) are provided.  Parking for persons with disabilities is available behind Strahan Coliseum using the Jowers Access Road off Charles Austin Drive.  Seating is available for guests with disabilities in Sections C, F, H, and K of the Coliseum.  Arrival is recommended at least one hour in advance because of the large number of people attending.  Persons requiring sign language services should contact the Office of Disability Services at (512) 245-3451 to arrange seating reservations.

ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible to participate in the commencement ceremony, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Applied for graduation during the official period.
  • Cleared all university holds for financial obligations.
  • Wear official regalia

REGALIA INFORMATION
You may order regalia from the Texas State University Bookstore. Please be advised that only the Texas State University Bookstore carries regalia.

MASTER REGALIA
All candidates must wear the official regalia. You may purchase your master's regalia (cap, gown, and hood) from the University Bookstore. Please purchase your regalia early. You may contact the University Bookstore at (512) 245-2862.
DOCTORAL REGALIA
All candidates must wear the official regalia. You may purchase your doctoral regalia (cap, gown, and hood) from the University Bookstore. Fine quality custom-made doctoral regalia requires measurements and takes a minimum of 8 weeks to arrive. Rental regalia is also available. Please contact the University Bookstore at (512) 245-2862 to order your regalia NOW!
COMMENCEMENT RESTRICTIONS
Coliseum regulations prohibit smoking, eating, or drinking in the Coliseum.  Guests are also prohibited from entering the Coliseum floor.
PHOTOGRAPHS
The University has made arrangements for a commercial photographer to take color photographs of each graduate during the diploma presentations.  A free proof will be mailed to your permanent address unless there is a privacy hold on your record.  You are under no obligation to purchase the photographs.

Dr. Michael Willoughby, Dean of the Graduate College, will be happy to pose with any graduate for pictures after the commencement ceremony.  If you would like to have your picture taken with Dean Willoughby, please return to the stage area immediately after the ceremony.

BROADCAST OF CEREMONIES
Commencement ceremonies will be broadcast on KTSW 89.9 FM, or log onto the KTSW site at ktsw.swt.edu and click on "Listen Live".
GRADUATION PROCEDURES
FORMATION – Candidates should arrive approximately one hour prior to the ceremony in order to form the processional line.  The map shows each College's position for the processional and for seating in the Coliseum. Candidates should gather in their respective gyms as specified on the map. The University is not responsible for any personal items left in these gyms.  Candidate cards are distributed in the gyms prior to formation.  Each candidate is responsible for retaining the card and presenting it to the name reader at the designated time.
PROCESSIONAL – College Marshals will prepare the candidates to march in the processional line.  Candidates with mobility limitations or other special needs should discuss those needs with the College Marshals or contact the Office of the Graduate College at (512) 245-2581.

NATIONAL ANTHEM – Gentlemen are asked to remove their caps and hats during the singing of the National Anthem.

PRESENTATION OF CANDIDATES – Each candidate will be recognized by the reading of their name from the candidate card.  After degrees have been conferred, diploma covers will then be distributed to individual candidates.

RECESSIONAL – Candidates will remain at their seats during the Recessional.

DIPLOMAS

If you wish to pick up your diploma, you may do so at the Registrar’s Office, J.C. Kellam Building room 111.  Diplomas may be picked up January 19 through February 4 and as listed below:
